A Wilhelmine Portrait Takes Shape

A tour of the Wilhelmine construction site on an icy December morning requires not only warm clothing and hot coffee, but also great enthusiasm and curiosity. The wide variety of building sections and the planning for the transformation only reveal themselves with time, careful attention, and an eye for detail.

We are very grateful for the dedicated team from Berliner Zeitung, who, together with Senior Project Manager Gesine Lenz and Claudia Kruschel of BASD Architekten, explored every aspect with a huge thirst for insights.

In this way, a special portrait of the Wilhelmine in its current state has come to life – an atmospheric snapshot of the listed ensemble. It captures a fleeting moment before the transformation is complete, a moment one might one day look back on nostalgically and say: Do you remember what it was like here in the winter of 2024?

EVERYTHING REMAINS DIFFERENT

One of the most important industrial areas in Europe once stretched from Berlin’s Ostkreuz to Schöneweide. Even today, impressive evidence of the industrial architecture from the turn of the last century can be found here. That includes the Accumulatoren Fabrik Aktiengesellschaft (AFA), a battery manufacturing company which had a worker welfare center built in 1912 at Wilhelminenhofstrasse 66 – 68. In 1948, the building was converted into a cultural center. From the very beginning, its beating heart was the 500 m² hall on the second floor of the building. Numerous festivities were celebrated here, and soon that will once again be the case. Cheers!
